Inspired by memories of the modest 50's and 60's beach houses in which the owner fondly recalls spending holidays in his youth.  When it came to build on this unique site directly opposite the dunes and beach protection zone at Sunrise Beach, the brief to Robin Spencer – an internationally recognised architect- was to maximise the building's connection with the sea utilising up-to-the-minute materials that related to these early beach houses - glass, stone, timber and Colorbond steel (the modern equivalent to the ubiquitous tin roof).
A business man who regularly travels overseas, he insisted the house "open and close like a suitcase" and be as casual as a campsite!
The result is a duplex beach house with a modern, non-pretentious façade that melds easily with the few remaining weekenders in the area and the substantial homes that dominate this part of the coastline.
The building is dissected into 2 separate houses each with stunning views of the coastline from Mooloolaba to Lion's Rock in Noos
Interior Features The floor plan features one large living room almost 14metres in length that forms the core of the house where everyone socializes, eat together and enjoy the magnificent views. The kitchen with central island bench and "elbow room" easily caters for all who wish to partake in the cooking of food, an essential part of any holiday. Extending the width of the villa is a generous ocean-view deck which acts as an outdoor room for the best part of the year.  As the site abuts a busy road the owner did not want to be distracted by traffic hence the height of the balustrade on the deck was purpose planned so the only vista when seated at the dining table or on the deck is of white water, sea & sky. The ground floor houses the garage, laundry, bathrooms and bedrooms. Upstairs is open plan comprising the dining, living and kitchen and convenient powder room tucked away off the lounge. The master bedroom and ensuite are spacious with views over the garden to the ocean.
Exterior Features With ventilation crucial in this climate, glass louvres and celestial windows make the most of the ocean breezes and flood the house with light without sacrificing privacy. Air conditioning however is installed in all 3 bedrooms and the living area for particularly hot and humid days and the large double garage acts a buffer zone for the afternoon sun.
In keeping with the building's exterior the materials used for the interior are restrained. The kitchen and living areas for example feature Queensland hardwood timbers purposely chosen for their knots and imperfections and marine ply on the ceiling add a sense of warmth and bring back memories of old beach houses after decades of use.
Additional Features and Amenities For the décor, John Croft of Brisbane selected stylish sophisticated colours and edited accessories: Rare Sydney Grey granite mined at Yatala in Queensland (considered more expensive than imported granite), for all bench tops, hand-painted tiles in the bathrooms, Miele kitchen appliances. Summer House Interior Design of Noosa chose furnishings to enhance the properties dimensions and features.
With an ideal location just a 4 minute drive to Hastings Street, its restaurants and shops and 35 minute drive to the Sunshine Coast airport, its unrestricted views and privacy and easy care construction, when the arrives the owner simply peels back doors and windows and is instantly on holiday.
